Präsidentschaftswahl in den Vereinigten Staaten 2016
Die 58. Wahl des Präsidenten der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika war auf den 8. November 2016 terminiert. Formal wurden an diesem Tag - wie bei jeder Präsidentschaftswahl in den Vereinigten Staaten - nur die Wahlmänner des Electoral College bestimmt, die ihre Stimmen für die Ämter des Präsidenten und des Vizepräsidenten abgeben. Die eigentliche Präsidentenwahl, bei der die Wahlmänner ihre Stimmen abgeben, fand 41 Tage später am 18. Dezember 2016 statt[1] und wurde vom Quereinsteiger Donald Trump gegen die aus den Vorwahlen hervorgegangene Demokratin Hillary Clinton gewonnen.

1 Kandidaten
Der 2012 wiedergewählte 44. Präsident der Vereinigten Staaten Barack Obama von der Demokratischen Partei konnte nach zwei Amtszeiten aufgrund des 22. Zusatzartikels zur Verfassung der Vereinigten Staaten 2016 nicht erneut antreten. Vizepräsident Joe Biden, der sich schon 2008 um eine Präsidentschaftskandidatur bemüht hatte, hatte ein erneutes Antreten nicht ausgeschlossen, genauso seine Parteifreundin und ehemalige Außenministerin Hillary Clinton, die an Obama in den Vorwahlen zur Präsidentschaftswahl 2008 gescheitert war.[2] Ende 2014 sagte Obama, dass Hillary Clinton, eine großartige Präsidentin wäre.[3] Senatorin Elizabeth Warren vom linken Flügel der Demokraten und eine der größten Wall-Street-Kritikerinnen im US-Senat wurde auch immer als mögliche Kandidatin genannt.[4]
Bei den Republikanern hatte nur Jeb Bush, ehemaliger Gouverneur von Florida und Bruder des ehemaligen Präsidenten George W. Bush, Interesse an einer Kandidatur geäußert. Mitt Romney, der gescheiterte Präsidentschaftskandidat von 2012, schloss eine weitere Kandidatur aus,[5] genau wie John McCain, der 2008 die Wahl verloren hatte. McCain sah in Jeb Bush, Lindsey Graham und Marco Rubio mögliche gute Bewerber, dies sagte er im Interview mit dem Sender Euronews.[6] Rick Perry, ehemalige Gouverneur von Texas, der in den Vorwahlen zur Präsidentschaftswahl 2012 von Mitt Romney geschlagen wurde, hatte ebenfalls nicht ausgeschlossen zu kandidieren,[7] genau wie Mike Huckabee, ehemalige Gouverneur von Arkansas, der in den Vorwahlen zur Präsidentschaftswahl 2008 von John McCain besiegt wurde. Vom rechten Flügel der Republikaner (Tea-Party-Bewegung) wurden Paul Ryan (erfolgloser Vizepräsidentschaftskandidat 2012), Sarah Palin (ehemalige Gouverneurin von Alaska) sowie den Senatoren Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz und Rand Paul Interesse an einer Kandidatur nachgesagt.
