Lungenentzündung (fachlich Pneumonie, lateinisch Pneumonia von altgriechisch πνεύμων pneumōn = Lunge) ist eine fieberhafte Infektionskrankheit, mit Husten und - vor allem bei bakteriellen Infektionen - Auswurf. Symptome sind z.B. auch Atemnot, Brustschmerzen und Abgeschlagenheit. Es gibt sehr unterschiedliche Verursacher dieser Krankheit, bekannt sind zum Beispiel die Adenoviren. Klinische Beobachtungen wurden von der Forschung vor allem bei Säuglingen und Kleinkindern sowie jungen Soldaten gemacht.[1] In schwereren Fällen können Lungenentzündungen tödlich verlaufen.

Die außerhalb eines Krankenhauses erworbene Pneumonie ist die nach Durchfallerkrankungen weltweit am zweithäufigsten registrierte Infektionskrankheit[2] und darum von hoher sozialmedizinischer und ökonomischer Bedeutung. Rund 90 % sind bakteriellen Ursprungs.
