Alzheimer ist die Bezeichnung einer Erkrankung des Gehirns, die vor allem, aber in Ausnahmefällen nicht nur, im höheren Lebensalter auftritt. Das Gehirn wird von fremdartigen Proteinen befallen und schrumpft deshalb unter anderem etwas zusammen. Die Krankheit beginnt mit erhöhter Vergesslichkeit und endet vielfach in fortgeschrittener geistiger Umnachtung.
