Mitochondrien (Einzahl Mitochondrium) sind Zellorganellen, die von einer Doppelmembran umschlossen sind und eigene Erbsubstanz (DNA) enthalten. Mitochondrien kommen als kugel- oder röhrenförmige Gebilde in den Zellen fast aller Eukaryoten vor, nicht aber bei Prokaryoten. Besonders viele Mitochondrien befinden sich in Zellen mit hohem Energieverbrauch; das sind unter anderem Muskelzellen, Nervenzellen, Sinneszellen und Eizellen. Die Mitochondrien besitzen fast ausnahmslos ein eigenes Genom, das Chondriom oder Mitochondriale DNA genannt wird.

Der deutsche Pathologe und Histologe Richard Altmann entdeckte das Mitochondrium 1886.
